Which Rago will work for me? A go to guide!

I’ve done a few posts now about Rago shapewear, it’s not secret I’m a big fan! I haven’t yet met a Rago I didn’t like, but there are A LOT of different styles and some work better than others for different body types, problem areas and depend on the outfit you are planning on wearing your shapewear under! Cinchers, girdles, level of shaping, garters, open bottom, lacette… so many options, which one do you choose?

Rather than a review, in this post I will look at some popular Rago shapewear types and styles, and summarise what their various strengths are, in my experience! In that spirit, the styles here are all ones I own and wear ūüôā From what I’ve seen, the majority¬†¬†of women who wear or want to wear shapewear desire a good amount of control and shaping, I certainly do! So all of the styles I have tried and am going to mention are firm or extra firm level of shaping.

Here are 3 types of shapewear, compared to wearing none at all. The extent of overall smoothing and shaping is a bit hard to see in the photos, but all of these take 1-2 inches off various areas ūüôā

Waist Cincher (also known as a Waist Nipper)
I have Rago cinchers in 3 different styles (It’s my favourite!!) – the Rag0 21¬†(firm shaping with garters), Rago 821¬†(firm shaping) and Rago 2107¬†(extra firm shaping with garters).
cinchersAll 3 of these styles come in various colours and on me, there is no discernible difference between the firm and extra firm, I would just choose whichever colour you like and whether you want garters or not. The garters on these styles are removeable.
Best for:
-Defining the waist to create an enhanced hourglass figure (by a few inches, it won’t work like a corset!)
-Overall smoothing of the tummy area
-Shorter than an open bottom girdle, if you are sitting for long periods, there is nothing to dig into your bottom
-Wearing with trousers, shorts or shorter dresses
When I would wear this: Every day! My problem area is around my middle only, so I find this shapewear perfect for me, as it targets specifically my waist and really nips it in (30 inches to 28 inches) , while not having anything over my bottom and legs.

Open Bottom Girdle
The Rago 1294 is a very popular girdle! It is extra firm shaping, and has a side zip with hook and eye closures to make getting it on a little easier. It has 6  non detachable garters.
Best for:
-Overall shaping and smoothing of the waist, tummy , bottom and hips
-A great all rounder
-Greater coverage (you won’t see your knickers)
When I would wear this:¬†I love the look of this girdle and it is one I wear for photoshoots or when it might be seen! It doesn’t bring my waist in quite as much as the waist cincher, but does take in a good inch over the waist and hips, I would recommend this or the long leg shaper if your lower half is the area you are wanting to minimise!

High waist long leg shaper (Shaping shorts)
The Rago 6207 is an extra firm high waist long leg shaper. It has 4 detachable garters, and the stocking tuck up into the leg (they look a little like a more attractive version of bike shorts!)
Best for:
-Overall shaping and smoothing of the waist, tummy , bottom and hips
-A smoother line than the open bottom girdle
-Another great all rounder
-Wearing with trousers
-Targetting thighs
When I would wear this: Under tight trousers or a wiggle dress where I didn’t want to see a seam showing, or I wanted a bit of bottom and thigh shaping!

Stockists and more information
In my opinion, Rago shapewear is very reasonable priced, but like any good undergarment shapewear it is an investment and you get what you pay for! So a little time spent on research and maybe asking a few questions can save you the expense of return and exchange postage.

Do my boobs look pointy in this? Exploring vintage style bras!

I have a love-hate relationship with bras. Back in pre-child days, with my carefree firm and perky still twenty-something breasts I often scorned bra wearing, even with my not insubstantial 10D or 12C bust… those babies basically defied gravity and my only real issue was whether it was a cold day or not. Fast forward to my early thirties, post pregnancy and breastfeeding my daughter for two ad half years… well, we’re not even talking about the same pair here any more! My comfort zone has become the push up and gel enhanced wonder that takes the deflated balloons and gives them lift and substance. When I’m wearing my bra armour, they still look quite impressive! But basically, I take my boobs off at the end of the night. Or, to be perfectly honest, as soon as I get home… because I’ve always found bras to be quite restricting and uncomfortable.

I love the look of vintage undergarments… AND the sound of a bra that looked pinup and sexy but was also comfortable – as many of the vintage reproduction and bullet bra styles are sans underwire. However the thought of an unpadded and not super lifting bra also terrified me somewhat… I felt a little naked just thinking about loosing my breasts in so brazen a way! So it was with some trepidation that I began my exploration into the vintage repro bra…

First up is the Rago Style 2191 Satin & Lace Fashion Bra, in red and black. I purchased mine here, from Pinup Girl Clothing. I love all of my Rago shapewear, so I was quite optimistic that this was going to be a comfortable, quality and supportive garment.

rago red

And I was not disappointed! I really like this bra. It is very comfortable, gives good support and the black and red is very attractive. Combined with the girdle and stockings it gives a really great sexy retro look. I like how it gives a nice retro shape under clothing without being overly pointy. This is a good every day bra, however I wouldn’t wear it under anything with a lower neckline, as it is full coverage and although supportive, is hardly cleavage enhancing! And I like the girls to have a good boost under anything lower cut ūüôā

Secrets and Lace has an amazing range of retro and vintage style lingerie, shapewear and of course – stockings. They¬†also have some exclusive limited edition Rago items that aren’t available anywhere else! I was beyond excited to discover their Bettie Page collection – a glamorous range of vintage inspired lingerie, shapewear, stocking and night wear that you could see Bettie herself wearing! Of course, the collection features a lot of leopard! I decided to try the Bettie Leopard Plunge Bra and the Bettie Bullet Bra. Going by their size charts and self measuring, I would have been a 36D. However converting my size from NZ to US sizing I would go from a 10D/12C (I vary depending on the bra) to a 32D/34C. I decided to stick with the direct conversion my NZ size and ordered the Plunge Bra in a 34C and the Bullet Bra in both a 32D and 34C (in 2 different colours since they were on sale!)

I LOVE this bra. It is very comfortable, even with the underwire and has soft, wide supportive straps. The style is very low cut, but the peek-a-boo pink covers just enough to not be indecent! Even so, I don’t get a feeling of spilling out of the cups, it feels nice and firm on. For someone not used to wearing a vintage shaped bra yet, this style is the closest looking to a modern bra, especially under clothes, so I have been wearing this almost every day. It is very uplifting (and cleavage enhancing!) and I hardly notice the absence of the extra padding I am used to.

Now, onto the bullet bras. I actually couldn’t see much of a difference in the sizes, both fit well. Which makes sense, because of how bra sizing works, the 32D and 34C are the same cup size. The 34C I had to do up on the tightest hook at the back, the 32D the midde hook. I have¬†seen many pictures of bullet bras on, but wearing one was quite a lot different than I expected. They are really pointy! I kind of expected more of a rounded cone, these really shape the breast into… well a “bullet” shape. Hmm makes sense I guess! There was a little gap where my boob didn’t quite squish into the end… I’m thinking this is where those bullet bra pads would be used. I really like how it looks from the front, the side view from my modern indoctrinated viewpoint is going to take some getting used to. So far, this is a style I would wear for ¬†photoshoot, but I haven’t been brave enough to wear one out under a sweater yet ūüôā I think it’s a style that will definitely grow on me, because the bras are just beautiful to look at as well as being very comfortable and supportive.

Lastly, I will look at the Dominique 7750 Longline Low Back Bra Bustier from Orchard Corset. This isn’t quite in the same category but since I had recently purchased this I thought I’d throw the review into this post! I have a dread of strapless bras… no matter how excellent they are, they can’t defy gravity. Even if¬†it doesn’t fall “down”… when “up” is somewhere near my waist without the holding power of straps, it’s a little disheartening. I just don’t wear anything that requires a strapless bra, or I wear a bolero to cover my straps! However after reading a review of this bustier on one of my favourite blogs, Pinup Persuasion (link here), I thought this might just be the answer to my strapless¬†woes and decided to give it a whirl.

I am fairly sure this is the right size for me, as it fits firmly around the back, and although there is a little extra room in the cups I think the smaller cup size would likely dig in to me. It definitely gives good lift and support, more than a strapless bra – although not as much as a bra with straps. I would wear a strapless dress with this – amazing! However I wouldn’t wear this if I had the option of wearing a bra with straps with my dress choice. There is a bit of a gap around the bottom on me, but I am used to the feeling of a firm fitting girdle now. I would wear a panty girdle underneath this for a special occasion. This would also take care of the slight “muffin” created at the bottom between the bustier and the underwear line. I like how the low back and plunge at the front mean it could be worn under a wide variety of different tops and dresses. All in all, I am very happy with this, and keen to once again get to delve into the world of strapless! Who would have thought!?

The girdle I am wearing in all of the above is the Rago longline open bottom girdle and the stocking are What Katy Did, purchased fro Rita Sue Clothing.

Hope you enjoyed this review!

Raving about Rago… vintage shapewear Part 2

In my last post here, I shared my experience with the Rago 6207 High waist long leg¬†panty girdle (I’m going to call them shaping shorts, as that’s a bit of a mouthful!). Which just to recap, is the best item of shapewear I’ve tried to far, vintage or otherwise! I have been wearing them most days and they really are so versatile and flattering and create such a lovely shape under vintage styles.¬†Needless to say,¬†I was pretty excited when my order from Orchard Corset arrived, with the Rago 6109 High waist panty girdle and the Rago 21 long line waist cincher!

Now as I mentioned in my previous post, I am trying out these garments wearing a dress I don’t wear at the moment as I find it clings around my middle – which I consider my personal “problem” area! So will this shapewear make my favourite dress perfectly wearable again like the shaping shorts did? Let’s see!

Rago 6109 High Waist panty girdle

The Rago high waist panty girdle (product details here)¬†is the non shorts sister of the Rago shaping shorts, and¬†also come in both black and white¬†colours, a lace¬†version and an option with a side zip. I decided to try a size down from a 30¬†to a 28¬†and the white colour this time. The size 30 in the¬†shaping shorts¬†took an inch off my waist and hips so will be interesting to see what the smaller size does! I also enlisted the help of my lovely sister as an extra guinea pig…

This is my beautiful sister au naturel, her measurements are 36-29-38

And wearing the Rago high waisted panty girdle…

Rago_6109_Ky Rago6109_Ky_2

The panty girdle took 1 inch off both hips and waist and lifted and smoothed very well, creating a nice silhouette under this very body hugging wiggle dress from PinupGirl Clothing’s Dixiefried range.

And on myself, it also took¬†1 inch off both hips and waist, the same as the shaping shorts. I haven’t included photos as they look just the same as the shaping shorts! They felt nice and firm at the top and still comfortable, even in the size down, I am thinking my ideal pair will be the shaping shorts in the size 28 now! However they did feel a little tight (but not cutting in)¬†around the leg elastic, my sister noticed this also (even on her skinny pins!)¬†So¬†these might not be¬†the best style if you don’t like anything snug around panty line, but¬†would be a great option¬†if you¬†prefer the look of the panty over¬†of the long leg version and don’t mind the snugness around the leg.

Rago 21 long line waist cincher

Now this looked exciting! (Product details here)

Rago cincher ky¬†First, on guinea pig one…

Kylie loved this, and said is was her favourite! She isn’t a regular wearer of vintage, but said this was a garment she would definitely wear. The cincher took 2 inches off her waist.

The first thing I noticed when I tried this on is that to get it to look right and not create a bulge at the top under the bra is that you need to pull it up much higher than the model on the website… right under the bra. Which is¬†quite a different look than I expected but creates a nice seamless one piece appearance.¬†The size 28 wasn’t too hard to do up on my 31 inch waist and felt firm but comfortable. I liked how supportive it felt, without feeling constrictive.

Rago cincher nat

It took 2 inches off my waist and made my problem¬†tummy area completely flat! Amazing! But to get my tick of approval, I have to be able to wear it all day and not be dying to rip it off in the middle of the office…
AND… I actually found this even more comfortable than the shaping shorts! Sorry shaping shorts, I have a new favourite, was good while it lasted, I still love you though!

So the verdict!!

If you are wanting to minimise your middle, the Rago 21 waist cincher works a dream!

Rago is a high quality, affordable brand and has quickly become my favourite! The waist cincher and girdles I have reviewed here are great –¬†and importantly –¬†everyday wearable¬†options to achieve a smooth enhanced hourglass figure under vintage style dresses and even trousers.

The shaping shorts are also fantastic, they too have awesome smoothing powers and the bonus of bum boosting and thigh thinning!

Don’t be¬†afraid of¬†erring on the small side for¬†sizing – in my experience these garments stretch and mould to your body wonderfully without discomfort!

What are your experiences with vintage shapewear? What are your favourites? I would love to hear about your own shapewear successes… and fails!

I have ordered this little beauty from Rita Sue Clothing, and am very excited to try it and let you all know how it erm… shapes up ūüėČ

Also keep an eye out for an upcoming review on the Dominique 7749 longline Push-Up Brasselette, for a girl who would not normally go near a strapless bra, this is pushing my boundaries!

My shapewear journey… raving about Rago!

There are a few little deceptions every girl is entitled to. Push up bras,¬†concealer, mascara… and¬†of course,¬†shapewear. Although technically, one is just enhancing (or erm squishing) one’s own assets, so perhaps deception isn’t quite the right term. In any case, whatever your shape or size, if you are like me, there are certain parts of your body that you¬†might feel less¬†than confident about. That is if you are naked. When I was in my 20s, I felt great naked. I still feel good naked, but child bearing, breast feeding, time and gravity mean I like to feel good naked at home… not walking down the street. Which is why clothes, and shapewear under them, are every mother’s (and non mother’s) little helper!

I like to be comfortable, and I¬†like my clothes to look good and well fitted on me. So shapewear and I have had a love-hate relationship. I remember being 3 months pregnant, heading out to dinner, and removing my control top pantyhose in the car and heaving them in the bin because I couldn’t stand the feeling. Not much has changed, I have a very limited tolerance for discomfort!

Before I discovered vintage shapewear, I tried a wide variety of control underwear, slips, and shorts. All kinds of wrong! The undies ride up my bum. The slips end up around my waist before I have even left the house. The shorts make me look like a lycra warrior, in beige. Still, there remained the persistent hope that the next thing I tried would work like magic…

Behold, my pile of Spanx!

Or should I say, graveyard?

I bought my first Rago undergarment last year, from Rita Sue¬†clothing,¬†a high waisted open bottom girdle in black, with a side zip. It felt like a miraculous garment! Instantly slimming and smoothing, it worked wonders under my pinup dresses.¬†However it too, was not without it’s flaws. I loved it’s vintage look, it didn’t ride up, and I’m pretty sure I did a happy dance when I saw the number it did on my waistline. BUT, the long length and non detachable stocking clips meant it couldn’t be worn under shorter dresses, or trouser of course. And I found the zip made my underwear did into me after wearing it for a few hours. So it still remained a “special occasion” item of shapewear.

Recently, I read some very good reviews on Rago shapewear from 2 of my favourite blogs and Miss Victory Violet¬†and Pin Up Persuasion, and I became very excited about trying out a Rago 6207 long leg high waist shaper. I ordered mine from Orchard Corset. My measurements are currently 36-31-39, and I ordered the size 30, a compromise between my hips being less than the size range and my waist being greater. They were surprisingly easy to wriggle into, considering they have no zip. And…. I found my magic pants! The instantly gave me a smooth shape and sucked in my mummy tummy, I tried a few of my tight wiggle dresses that I don’t wear at the moment as they are too snug and they looked amazing! They were higher than I expected, sitting right up at my bust line, and do require a bit of adjustment to not get a roll under the bra line. I liked how the stocking clips were removable, as I was planning on wearing them under trousers at times, so no stockings necessary. Ok, so here are my brutally honest photos, they aren’t great but they tell the story! I’m wearing my favourite pink Dixiefried dress, from Pinupgirl Clothing. I used to wear this dress all the time, but after putting on some weight, this is definitely not a dress I could wear and feel comfortable in without shapewear underneath!

I took my measurements before and after, and this garment took 1 inch off both my waist and hips, and well as overall smoothing and some lifting of the derriere! Well they looked great, but I’d been through this before – would they stand the wearing test?? The answer is, yes! I wore these during an average busy day and they were definitely wearable. After a few days of wear, I barely noticed them at all. I love these so much, I whipped them off recently at a family dinner and got my sister and sister-in-law to try them too! Nothing like a bit of enthusiasm, my family are pretty used to this!¬†And I ordered the Rago 21 waist cincher and 6109 high waist panty girdle ūüôā

Next post, I will review both my 2 new Rago shapers both¬†on me, and my lovely sisters –¬†who have agreed to help¬†me¬†share¬†with you Rago, on real bodies!
