Summer is in sight … Get inspired with fruits and florals!

I am so excited about the warming weather, longer days and one of the best parts of summer… ditching the winter woolies! Bring on the cropped trousers and summery frocks … time to bring the arms out of hiding with pretty blouses and show off those (nearly) bare legs!

I put together a couple of outfits in my favourite summer combos – fruits and florals and teamed up with David Watson, an Auckland based photographer, to get these summery themed shots! The weather wasn’t entirely cooperative (for light or for my curl set!), but David is an amazing photographer and still managed to get these beautiful images out at Cornwallis Beach.

Strawberry Fields
A  perfect pinup picnic, that’s red, white and strawberry all over! I love strawberry accessories, and this Tatyana dress and petticoat pair perfectly with a gorgeous strawberry necklace from Punky Pins, a novelty brooch made by me (pinned to a cute hair bow from Made With Love NZ) and this adorable strawberry shaped purse found on Aliexpress.

Celebrating Blonde – A tribute to Marilyn

I have always loved the amazing shots of Marilyn, taken by George Barris on an LA beach in 1962, just weeks before her tragic death. I was lucky to see the exhibition of some of these original photographs here in NZ last year. I love how beautiful, natural, vibrant and playful she is! In the words of George Barris –

“There was nobody like Marilyn Monroe,” he said. “There never was and there never will be.”

I have always dreamed of doing a shoot inspired by these iconic images of Marilyn.

Last week, the day before I was planning on a HUGE change away from being blonde (as I’ve been for most of my adult life)… I asked my best friend on a spur of the moment idea, to get some shots of me, with these images as inspiration.

My wonderful friend Katy, not only used her artistic magic as a makeup artist, but also brought her experience from in front of the lens…. to take my basic point and shoot digital camera and capture these images!

It was the perfect way to send off my blonde bombshell days!

A trip back to the golden days of Hollywood…

I’ve always wanted to play the silver screen starlet and do a real old Hollywood film noir style photoshoot. The perfect opportunity came when Rosemary Morris, one half of the talented husband and wife team that is, suggested she’d like to team up for a shoot… and her ideas were exactly that!

Rosemary, and her husband Peter are based in West Auckland and are an immensely talented couple. They shoot a range of different styles, from fitness to glamour, to family, maternity and corporate. I first met them when I booked a glamour shoot around 4 years ago, a treat after having my daughter and wanting to feel glamorous again! Since then, they’ve shot a wonderful family shoot for us as well as capturing the incredible images of our wedding in January.

For this shoot, we used black and white shots studio glamour from the 40s and 50s as inspiration. I just can’t get over how beautiful these photographs are!

One of my very best friends, and an amazingly talented makeup artist, Katy Pulham of Bella Rouge Makeup, did a stellar job transforming me into a glamorous Hollywood starlet… and  also making sure my makeup would look appropriate under the very harsh lighting that we would be using to get the moody shadows in this shoot!

So, here are the shots!

LL02 (1024x794) LL04 (1024x733)The fantastic dress in these shots is a vintage Colin Cole, who was a renowned New Zealand designer in the 60s, right through to the 80s. He is well known for making many of Kiri Te Kanawa’s custom couture dresses. I have 2 of his gowns, and they are the most breathtaking and luxurious items I own! I was so enamoured with the first one I found, when this beauty turned up, I couldn’t believe my luck.

LL07 (1024x652) LL03 (813x1024)The lingerie in these shots I purchased from Pinup Girl Clothing, the Gossard Retrolution plunge bra and panty girdle. It’s a fantastic special occasion set! I wore this at my wedding, and it works well under many of my evening dresses, perfect for light smoothing and nipping in of the waist and amazing bust enhancing powers.

LL06 (569x1024) LL01 (763x1024) LL05 (721x1024) LL08 (706x1024)In these last shots, I am wearing a favourite little black dress from Wheels and Dollbaby, a vintage fur cape that was my grandmother’s and Pinup Couture heels. The bridal veil was my wedding veil, a custom creation by Linda McCarthy.

I hope you enjoyed these images!

Oh My DIY! Pinup does renovations…

I’ve had this idea in my head for a while now, that I wanted to take the traditional pinup photo somewhere new, and bring together some of the different sides of my personality, with a sense of  playfulness and fun.

This iconic Rosie the Riveter image was the starting point and inspiration to create these images!

I immediately thought of Zandy (Zandy J Photography) for this project as I love her work, and she has taken some great shots of me before (see them here). Not to mention she is so friendly and relaxed and gives great direction…immediately putting those photo shoot nerves to rest!

Once upon a time… a lonely man-less lady wanted to makeover her tired old boudoir….
“Whatever will I do?”, she cried!
Then she got a clue, put on her big girl panties, threw out the stereotypes, put on her tool belt and got stuck in…

The most important tool every lady needs is a good pencil…

Mini Shoot with Zandy J Photography

Last  month I had the fun opportunity to take part in a mini pinup photoshoot by Zandy J Photography. Zandy does fabulous pinup and portrait work, you can check her out here . My 20 minute photo shoot took place around St Kevin’s Arcade and started off with getting my hair done by the amazing Ella (Miss Victory Violet) and makeup by the very talented Rose of Decadia Vintage, at Rita Sue clothing. They did an incredible job and I felt so pampered and glamourous! I was one of the last out of 8 girls that Zandy was shooting that day and it was starting to get cold and rainy so we didn’t venture far, but there are so many interesting locations around St Kevin’s arcade that made for some very cool backdrops to my photos.

The outfit I chose to wear was my black Alika circle dress by Tatyana Clothing, purchased from Rita Sue. I love the old school glamour of this dress, and the lattice style detail at the neck and sleeves gives it a subtle sexiness while still being very elegant! The full circle skirt looks amazing with a petticoat, and I chose a dark red colour Hellbunny petticoat from Rita Sue to give a pop of colour and bring out the the red in my Cutiepie heels from Pinup Girl Clothing. and red lips and hair flower.

With the detailed neckline I kept the jewellery simple, with just some sparkly red confetti lucite earrings from Pinup Girl Clothing.

Zandy was great to work with and good at giving directions to someone like me who in’t the most experienced at posing! It was a lot of fun and I was very excited to see the result! And here are  some of my favourite shots 🙂

Thanks so much to Zandy, Ella and Rose! I have an exciting new project with Zandy coming up, something I bit different, and I can’t wait to share, I’ll keep you posted!
